All About The Wood

|
At RF we are serious about our wood. We use only the finest exotic woods from
around the world. Exotics are rare by nature and present some challenges:
Quality
Our products are made from the finest stock. We search through a lot of stock
and hand select only the best for our products. Our goal is to find and use the
best and the most unusual pieces of wood possible.
Quantity
Quantity is always an issue. Exotic wood supply varies widely. We keep
a sharp eye out for the woods we use regularly, but sometimes there definitely
is more demand than supply.
For example, building a showcase requires a fair amount of wood. Since we
strive to build each case from a single plank of wood, it’s not always readily
available in the quantity required. Using a single plank for each case ensures
a seamless flow of grain pattern and preserves the look created by Mother
Nature.
Plus, by nature exotic woods require a little more effort to coordinate. The
color and grain pattern on many exotic woods vary greatly from plank to plank.
Granted, many times we purposefully juxtapose the patterns and colors to
achieve a singularly striking look - and many times those cases turn out to be
our favorite creations.
Size
Much of the wood we find is simply not wide enough. For our show cases, the
wood must be at least 6” wide to achieve a case deep enough to hold a guitar or
other fine musical instrument. Woods are milled to various lengths and widths
and finding a piece just the right size can be a challenge.
When working with exotics, three challenges must be overcome before we even
start to build – quality, quantity and size. You can count on us to rise to the
challenge because we take great pride in the finished work.
